Sybil Stewart worked for many years in theatre and television before turning to teaching and founding the Elvet Ballet School in Durham City. Three more schools were opened in Ryton, Gateshead and Crook. The Ryton and Gateshead schools were taken over by former pupils. Miss Stewart continued to run the Durham and Crook schools until she moved to the Highlands where she opened the Dingwall school in 2005. During that time pupils have progressed through RAD examinations from Primary to Grade Seven and Intermediate. They have also performed in three school ballets, one local pantomime as well as ‘The Nutcracker’ and then ‘Coppelia’ with the Highland Youth Ballet. Miss Stewart has been awarded life membership of The Royal Academy of Dance.
